How to Commission a Painting: What to Expect

How do you commission a painting?

Commissioning a painting means one is painted for you, to your size and your colours, rather than chosen from a finished piece. You send the room, the dimensions and the feeling you want. The painting is then made to order, and it exists as a single piece that nobody else owns.

What to send to begin

A photograph of the wall, the measurements you want the finished canvas to be, and a reference for colour or mood if you have one. That is enough to quote and to start. You do not need a brief written like an architect's.

What happens after that

We confirm the size and the direction, then paint it. You see the work as it progresses and can raise anything you want changed. Custom work is priced by area, so the size drives the cost.

How long it takes

A hand-painted commission takes weeks rather than days, because the paint has to be built up and then cure properly before it can travel. We will tell you the honest timeline for your size rather than a number that sounds good.

What you receive

A single original painting in the size you asked for, made once, that exists nowhere else. That is the difference between a commission and a purchase off a shelf.
